Indian shot, Canna indica

Indian shot is a tall (up to 1m high) perennial that grows from a thick, branching, underground rhizome. The large green, broad leaves, taper to a point. Flowers are red, orange or yellow below, with narrow long petals. The green, spiny, three-valved capsules contain hard black seeds. The seeds are called “Indian shot” as they resemble lead shot ammunition used in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are often used to make jewellery in their native Caribbean.
