Yellow oleander, Thevetia peruviana / Casabela thevetia

Yellow oleander is an extremely poisonousevergreen shrub or small tree native to Mexico and Central America, with a milky sap, reaching up to 6m high.

Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, bright green, glossy above and paler below. Flowers are yellow, trumpet shaped and twisted in the bud and are sometimes fragrant. Fruits are globular, slightly fleshy with a diameter of 4-5cm. They are green in colour, turning hard and black when ripe and contain a nut.

Flowering and fruiting period: All year

It is tolerant to heat and drought, grows rapidly and numerous light weight seeds are easily dispersed by wind, water and animals, so it has the ability to quickly form dense stands and outcompete indigenous vegetation.

To eradicate this tree: Cut off at the base and apply a suitable herbicide to the freshly cut stump.

All parts of this plant are extremely poisonous to humans and animals, especially the seeds and sap, so take great care when cutting down this tree.
